All over social media you’ll see memes and jokes about the “wine moms”. Not only there, but it’s become so trendy you can find glasses, shirts, and various other items toting the phrase in a multitude of stores.

Being a mother is one of the greatest joys in the world… but it can also be stressful, exhausting, and thankless at times. Hence the common theme these days: moms drink wine, and a lot of it. Although many people believe wine to be the healthiest of alcoholic beverages, it comes ladled with a series of health risks just like all other types of booze.

Thankfully, with views on cannabis starting to become more lax and various states legalizing these products, whether for medical or recreational purposes, the trope of the wine mom is starting to give way to the new age of the “canna-mom”. Although there is still a bit more stigma aimed at the latter, especially depending on where you live, the rate at which moms use cannabis as a way to unwind will only continue to grow.

So How Many Moms are Actually Using Cannabis Products?

According to Eaze, a cannabis technology company that delivers medical products throughout southern California… quite a few. They surveyed 15,000 customers in the state and discovered that women have been using cannabis at consistently increasing rates. In the last 2 years, there has been an 10% increase in the amount of women who use cannabis products.

Women are buying more CBD products than men

Not only that, but women’s spending has increased by 20% on said products. It’s expected that one day, females will surpass their male counterparts in cannabis consumption, and that includes all the moms out there. Overall, women are buying more CBD products than men, and anecdotal evidence tells us that most of these women are mothers.

While the survey didn’t focus specifically on moms, they did note that 22% of respondents were parents – 63% of which reported daily cannabis use. Parents were also more likely to replace alcohol with cannabis, 52% more likely to be specific. In general, 87% of respondents claim to be consuming less alcoholic beverages in favor of cannabis products and 13% say they have stopped drinking completely.

Why Wine May Not Be The Healthiest Option

While it sounds like the alcohol industry’s worst nightmare may be coming to fruition, the switch to cannabis is actually great news for consumers. Not only will it do wonders for their own personal health, but alcoholism has proven itself time and time again to be a public safety hazard and a drain on the national healthcare system, so this is a positive thing for the country as a whole. Red wine specifically does have antioxidants that are beneficial for human health, however, that’s not the case when someone drinks it daily and excessively.

A little known fact is that that stay at home moms report higher than average rates of depression, anxiety, and anger. Many have been self-medicating with wine, but this is completely counterintuitive. The way alcohol interacts with neurotransmitters in the brain can actually increase these negative feelings, so when the buzz wears off, users are left feeling even lower than before. The cruel game is that users then need more and more alcohol to feel the same dopamine buzz they felt in the beginning, which can eventually lead to full-blown alcoholism.

Alcohol and increase feelings of depression and anxiety

Furthermore, alcohol isn’t exactly a fountain of youth. Despite the proposed beauty benefits of drinking red wine, new information indicates that it can actually age the skin. According to Dr. Isabel Sharkar, “red wine is one of the worst drinks for your skin, particularly if you already have something like rosacea.” Because alcohol is a vasodilator, it opens the blood vessels leaving users with a dull, red, and flushed appearance.

In general, alcohol has been linked to a slew of health issues including inflammation of the liver, increased blood pressure, assorted cancers, and more. A good rule of thumb is that any more than 2-4 glasses of wine per week (normal sized glasses not anything supersized) crosses the threshold into unhealthy territory.

The Benefits of Using Cannabis Instead

Multiple studies have proven that cannabis, full spectrum and even isolated cannabinoids like CBD, are a safe way to treat anxiety and depression. In various studies, CBD was shown to increase serotonin levels in the brain. This was not only effective in treating depression, but it did so really fast. Prescription antidepressants can take up to 3 weeks to have any effect. Studies on mice models show that there was an increase in serotonin immediately after the first injection and it lasted longer than other treatment options.

CBD has also been deemed an effective and non-invasive way to treat anxiety. In various studies, researchers determined that “[CBD] significantly reduced anxiety, cognitive impairment, and discomfort, whereas the placebo group experienced higher anxiety, cognitive impairment, [and] discomfort.” CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system which plays a crucial role in various psychological disorders.

Cannabinol can be a powerful sedative

Various cannabinoids – THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD (cannabidiol), and CBN (cannabinol) – are also excellent sleep aids, which is another ailment that’s common among mothers, and women in general. Of the cannabinoids listed above, it’s believed that CBN is the most powerful sedative, followed by THC, then CBD.

And since we were previously on the topic of beauty and youthfulness, yes, it can help with that too! Seriously though, to all the fellow moms out there, what can’t cannabis do these days? CBD has been making a mark in the beauty industry lately, especially in the realm of skin care products. CBD is an anti-inflammatory and an anti-oxidant, which can help with multiple skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and signs of aging.

Final Thoughts

If you’re a mom in need of a healthy way to relax after a long, stressful day of parenting, consider looking into the vast world of cannabis products. You don’t have to give up the wine completely if you don’t want to, but cutting back could definitely have some benefits for your health. If you are nervous about trying cannabis, you can start by dipping your toe in the water with some high-quality CBD oil and if you like it, go from there. Just remember that you’re not alone and many moms are dumping the wine and turning to cannabis lately.
