We celebrate so many holidays, that sometimes the exact meaning or history can be lost for many people. And this includes Labor Day. In a way, it’s one of the more obvious holidays, as the name itself implies ‘work’, but how it came about is a different story. Labor Day is a federal holiday which comes with a day off work, and most businesses closed. It’s one of the 11 ‘bank holidays’ in the US, implying that even banks do not open on this day. Labor Day started back in the 1800’s, with the first official celebration occurring on September 5th, 1882 in New York City specifically. It was celebrated on a Tuesday, and the whole shebang was put on by the Central Labor Union. This came as a result of the mounting desire of labor unions and activists to have a specific day to celebrate the contributions of the standard worker in America.

This first Labor Day was not a federal holiday though, but was put together as a result of a state ordinance. New York was the first state to make a bill for this, but Oregon was the first state to pass such a bill which officially recognized the day as of February 21st 1887. When the mid-1890’s rolled around, 23 states had passed laws to create a labor holiday, and on June 28th of that year, Congress finally passed a bill making an official Labor Day, designating it for the first Monday of every September. Much like in current times, the holiday was originally celebrated with the three Ps: parties, parades, and picnics. The original pattern was to have a parade, followed by parties and other festivities.

In 1909, a second semi-holiday was established on the Sunday before Labor Day – called Labor Sunday – which was meant to celebrate the educational and spiritual aspects of being a worker. This holiday didn’t take off in the same way, and is barely known about today, though many churches still do celebrate it.

  1. Heat water, brown sugar, molasses, ketchup, and tomato sauce in a saucepan, and bring to a simmer.
  2. Add in the onion, garlic, and celery, and allow to simmer for eight minutes on low heat.
  3. Put in a blender, along with all other ingredients, and puree until smooth.
  4. Slather all over your choice of meat.

Buffalo style

Another option is to go buffalo style, and here is a recipe for a Spicy Canna-Buffalo Sauce, one of the more simple options, with the following ingredient list for 2 1/2 cups:

  • 2 cups blue cheese dressing
  • 1/4 cup butter, cubed
  • 6 ounces hot sauce
  • 16 ounces blue cheese salad dressing

  • 2 cups tomato sauce

  • 1 1/4 cups red wine vinegar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 small lime for juice
  • 3 tablespoons of chopped green onion or just use 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 clove of chopped garlic or just use 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/4 – 1/2 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 – 1 teaspoon coarsely ground pepper

What to do with all this stuff? Here are the instructions:

  1. Add together the ground weed, onions, and the juice from the lime in a pot and cook on low heat while stirring. Do this for 1-1.5 hours without allowing it to boil.
  2. Mix all liquid ingredients in a saucepan on medium heat.
  3. Add seasonings, and cook for 45 minutes.
  4. Lower to a simmer for 20 more minutes, while stirring occasionally. When it reaches the correct consistency, turn off the heat.

Labor Day and barbecues – the tradition

How is Labor Day usually celebrated currently? The same way as 4th of July and Memorial Day, by getting blasted with friends and throwing a barbecue. Large barbecues could still be found in the mid-1900’s hosted by organizations like the AFL and CIO, but the holiday was losing its appeal of mass celebration, and becoming more about smaller, more intimate, partying.

By the 1950’s and 60’s, it became commonplace to see advertisements in publications for barbecue equipment, like grills, and charcoal, which further ignited the idea of the backyard barbecue, which has continued on to this day.
