A little about Labor Day

We celebrate so many holidays, that sometimes the exact meaning or history can be lost for many people. And this includes Labor Day. In a way, it’s one of the more obvious holidays, as the name itself implies ‘work’, but how it came about is a different story. So, here’s a little bit to expand your knowledge base on the holiday of Labor Day.

Labor Day is a federal holiday which comes with a day off work, and most businesses closed. It’s one of the 11 ‘bank holidays’ in the US, implying that even banks do not open on this day. It doesn’t have a specific date, but is celebrated on the first Monday of each September. Labor Day is just as much associated with the beginning of the school year, as it is for barbecues, although these days, many schools start before it. Growing up, we always knew that once Labor Day occurred, the first day of classes was right behind it.

Labor Day started back in the 1800’s, with the first official celebration occurring on September 5th, 1882 in New York City specifically. It was celebrated on a Tuesday, and the whole shebang was put on by the Central Labor Union. This came as a result of the mounting desire of labor unions and activists to have a specific day to celebrate the contributions of the standard worker in America.

Labor Day

This first Labor Day was not a federal holiday though, but was put together as a result of a state ordinance. New York was the first state to make a bill for this, but Oregon was the first state to pass such a bill which officially recognized the day as of February 21st 1887. When the mid-1890’s rolled around, 23 states had passed laws to create a labor holiday, and on June 28th of that year, Congress finally passed a bill making an official Labor Day, designating it for the first Monday of every September. Much like in current times, the holiday was originally celebrated with the three Ps: parties, parades, and picnics. The original pattern was to have a parade, followed by parties and other festivities.

In 1909, a second semi-holiday was established on the Sunday before Labor Day – called Labor Sunday – which was meant to celebrate the educational and spiritual aspects of being a worker. This holiday didn’t take off in the same way, and is barely known about today, though many churches still do celebrate it.

How-to make a great cannabis-infused barbecue sauce for your Labor Day cookout

These days there are plenty of finished cannabis-infused barbecue sauce products that can be bought, but this isn’t always the best answer for people who live in places which are inaccessible to these products. Cannabis, after all, isn’t legal for recreational use in other then 18 states. In order to accommodate a wider audience, let’s look at some recipes for how to make a cannabis-infused barbecue sauce so that everyone, no matter where they live, can take part in a stoner barbecue.

Honey mustard

One thing to remember is that in order to make a cannabis-infused barbecue sauce, you need to decarboxylate your weed, or buy an infused cannabis product that can be used. How strong the sauce will be is dictated by how much cannabis or cannabis oil is used. Make sure to check your cannabis product, the recipe you desire, and the calculations for the amount of sauce you need, to ensure you get the right amount of cannabinoids in your sauce. Most recipes come with basic instructions on how much cannabis to use.

One recipe, to get that sweet and tangy honey mustard flavor, can be found here as a Cannahoney BBQ Sauce. This is one of the simplest recipes you’ll find, and makes four servings! Here are the ingredients:

  • 3/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons CannaHoney
  • 2 1/2 tablespoons regular honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon cider vinegar

Labor Day and barbecues – the tradition

How is Labor Day usually celebrated currently? The same way as 4th of July and Memorial Day, by getting blasted with friends and throwing a barbecue. There are still bigger festivities that occur, and plenty of parades, parties, and picnics – the latter two of which also fall under the category of ‘barbecue’. In fact, barbecues were being done since the beginning of Labor Day, as barbecuing was a standard way to celebrate civic holidays. However this usually meant massive barbecues for an entire city. By the beginning of the 20th century, large barbecues could be found in almost every city with a lot of workers.

As parades and bigger group celebrations went out of style, barbecuing remained, and became more of a small gathering activity, partly because of the South, and how that region tends to celebrate events with picnics and barbecues. Often times, stands were set up for the holiday, featuring smoked meats for about half a dollar a pound. Large barbecues could still be found in the mid-1900’s hosted by organizations like the AFL and CIO, but the holiday was losing its appeal of mass celebration, and becoming more about smaller, more intimate, partying.

By the 1950’s and 60’s, it became commonplace to see advertisements in publications for barbecue equipment, like grills, and charcoal, which further ignited the idea of the backyard barbecue, which has continued on to this day. So, in honor of the working American needing a day off, and with the growing legalization of cannabis, try out these cannabis-infused barbecue sauce recipes, to make the perfect stoner Labor Day celebration.

Conclusion

And there you have it. If you’re looking to celebrate Labor Day this year with a barbecue, and want to make it a buzzy affair, try one of these mouth-watering cannabis-infused barbecue sauce recipes, and bring together delicious food, and a great relaxing high!
